Mission Statement
Virginia Ice Sports, in collaboration with the UVA Foundation and the University of Virginia, is committed to the planning, development, and operation of a world-class ice arena—establishing a sustainable, inclusive facility that advances ice sports across Virginia while enriching the greater Charlottesville community.
Introduction
We are a group of alumni working to tell the history of ice sports at UVA (including men’s and women’s ice hockey and figure skating), unite ice sports alumni, and to build an ice sports complex near the Charlottesville airport for use by UVA students, administrators, and Central Virginia community members.
As the North Fork Ice Arena project progresses, we’ve remained committed to involving community voices and being transparent with the process. We regularly share updates via email and our Events & News page.
As we are a developing Alumni Interest Group (AIG) working with the UVA Alumni Association, we are still getting out the word about our work. Please share this website with any UVA hockey or figure skating alumni in your circles—or with anyone who would have an interest in what we do!
One of the many joys of this journey has been meeting and hearing from ice sports alumni from across generations. We’d love to hear from you: please share any comments or questions (or even just an introduction) with us at virginiaicesports@virginia.edu.
Sincerely,
Dan Smythe (Col class of ’79, Darden class of ’84), President, Virginia Ice Sports
Roger Voisinet, Co-President, Virginia Ice Sports

How We Got This Far
“You gentlemen have been really working hard. The pitch to UVA requires fiscal assurance. You can start with $10 million from me. I hope you have some more hockey fans to put up dollars. All the Best-this is BIG!”
