Reunions 2025

John Zimmermann (Col class of ’81) & Vic Bell

The university held Reunions 2025 the last weekend in May. Scott Oswald (Col class of ’90), Board of Trustees president, welcomed alumni back to One University Circle for an open house on Saturday. The event was well attended with over 20 Phis present; however, we had a few guests that made the weekend extra special! On Friday, May 30, our good friend Vic Bell (Engr class of ’65, Darden class of ’67) stopped by. Vic was treasurer of the house in ’63 and president in ’64. While visiting, Vic meticulously reviewed every name on the ’61 composite – the oldest one in our possession. Vic shared the brothers’ nicknames, hometowns and post-college careers. It was a fascinating glance into our past. So much has changed since: in the ’60s, hair was kept short, students wore tie and jackets to class, and incredibly, no women at UVA! However, we have much in common with the brothers who came before us – like us, they liked

to party (drinking beer was a reoccurring theme), have fun, hang out with their brothers and try to get dates. Try being the operative word.

On Saturday, May 31, three brothers from the class of ’75, who were celebrating the 50th anniversary of

their graduations, stopped by. It was a thrill for all of us to get to meet Jim Eyler (Col class of ’75), Rick Cancelosi (Engr class of ’75) and Pete Stoudt (Col class of ’75). Pete spoke passionately about his time as an active, which culminated in his presidency his fourth year. After graduation, Pete remained active in the house for 25 years as a board member and then as president of the board. He truly loved being a Phi and giving back. But what got his juices really flowing was talking about intramurals! He bragged about winning Hi Point for all four of his years. He shared that he wrestled for the house for four years and that he gave boxing a try his fourth year. Pete had the bad fortune to go against the reigning champ in his weight class in his first boxing match. He got hit pretty hard but refused to give up. He lost the bout but went the distance. However, no one considered him a loser – his brothers loved that he gave it his all for the brotherhood.
