Tradition. Excellence. Community.
Founding & Independent Years (1999–2003)
The UVA Women’s Ice Hockey Club was officially established December 1, 1999, when students Libby Pettibone (Col class of ’03), president and captain; Nina Barker (Col class of ’03), vice president; and Julia Vollmers (Col class of ’02), treasurer, secured recognition as a Contracted Independent Organization (CIO). Soon after, the team achieved full club sport status.
That first season, Nina’s cousin, David Barker (Law class of ’02), served as the inaugural coach. In the spring of 2000, the Cavaliers played their first-ever game — a 2–1 win over Maryland’s developmental team, a milestone that signaled the program’s arrival.
From 1999–2002, the club was led by its founders: Pettibone served as president and captain, with Barker as vice president and Vollmers as treasurer (until her graduation in 2002). In 2002–03, Pettibone continued as captain while Catherine Hovell (Engr class of ’05) assumed the presidency, guiding the organization through its next phase of growth.
By 2000–01, the roster had grown to more than 20 players, supported in part by a generous donation from the Raven Society. The coaching staff expanded as well, with Ryan Benedict (Darden class of ’01) as head coach, alongside Craig Lorie (Engr class of ’93), Mark Vorhees, and Carter Whisnand (Col class of ’94, Col class of ’01). These early leaders provided continuity, with Mark staying on until Dalton Ford and Eric Sawyer joined in 2003.
The first roster blended a few experienced skaters — notably Heather Bolingbroke Prekop (Col class of ’04, Grad class of ’06) and Michelle L’Heureux (Col class of ’02) as offensive standouts, and Pettibone (now Pass) and Jennifer Sokol (Engr class of ’01) as defensive anchors — with many true beginners. What might have been a limitation instead became the team’s greatest strength: relentless effort, rapid growth, and an eagerness to learn.
The Cavalier Daily spotlighted the program’s development in “The Puck Stops Here” (2000) and “Playing on Solid Ice” (2001), capturing the enthusiasm surrounding its growth and evolving culture.
Between 1999 and 2003, UVA competed independently against regional clubs, laying the foundation for its eventual entry into the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) under the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) in 2003 — a move that launched the program into structured league play.
DVCHC Era (2003–2020)
UVA’s transition to the DVCHC in 2003 marked the start of a dominant chapter. With Dalton Ford and Eric Sawyer joining the coaching staff, the Cavaliers captured championships in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2012.
Catherine Hovell remained president through 2004 and captained the team in 2004–05. A talented 2004 recruiting class, composed largely of first-years with prior hockey experience, elevated UVA into consistent contention.
A talented 2004 recruiting class, composed largely of first-years with prior hockey experience, elevated UVA into consistent contention. Leadership also evolved:
- Catherine Hovell (Engr class of ’05), president 2002–04, captain 2004–05
- Jenny Kane (Col class of ’07), president 2005–06, captain 2005–07, ACHA Academic All-American 2006
- Katherine Hunter (Com class of ’06), co-captain 2005–06
In 2006–07, Caroline Pugliese (Col class of ’08) became president while Kane remained captain, and Meredith Danberg-Ficarelli (Col class of ’07) earned DVCHC Defensive Player of the Year honors. When key veterans graduated, new leaders stepped forward, as reported in “Cavaliers Look to Rebound After Losing Seniors” (2007).
The following year, Eleanor Mullen (Nurs ’09) served as president with Pugliese as captain (2007–08). Rebecca Rallis (Col ’11) then assumed the presidency in 2008–09, marking the final stage of the early era before the team’s next surge in success — including back-to-back DVCHC titles in 2008–09 and 2009–10, and a fourth championship in 2011–12.
After Eric Sawyer’s departure in 2014, Tony DiOrio joined Ford behind the bench, later assuming head coaching duties. Under DiOrio, and with strong leadership from Kaethe Walther (Col class of ’18), president and captain and Sarah Walshak (Col class of ’19), vice President and assistant captain, UVA captured its fifth DVCHC title in the 2017-2018 school year.
This period also showcased standout honors:
- Libby Pettibone, DVCHC Founder’s Award, 2003
- Nancy Norman (Nurs class of ’12), Sportsmanship Award, 2011
- All-Star selections: Maggie Cearley (Col class of ’12), 2011; Erin Lyons (Col class of ’17) and Alexandra Griswold (Com class of ’15), 2014; and Taisiya Novopachennaia (Engr class of ’17) and Hannah Latham (Col class of ’17), 2014.
The program persevered through logistical challenges. In 2006, the Cavalier Daily reported that practice ice at Main Street Arena cost nearly $5 per minute, straining the budget. When the arena closed in 2017, UVA relocated first to Haymarket Ice Plex, then to Liberty’s LaHaye Ice Center, nearly 70 miles from Grounds — a move that underscored the team’s resilience.
WACCHL & ACHA DII Era (2020–Present)
Seeking stronger regional competition and reduced travel, UVA joined the Women’s Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey League (WACCHL) in 2020. Though the pandemic canceled the 2020–21 season, the team rebounded quickly. In 2022, the Cavaliers entered the ACCHL/ACHA Division II, gaining access to a national competitive pathway.
After Tony DiOrio stepped aside in 2021, alumna Kelly Townsend (Col class of ’21) helped stabilize the program, later becoming head coach in 2022 and earning ACCHL Coach of the Year (2024). Supportive parents — from the Todaro, Sliwa, and Cleary families — stepped in to assist on and off the bench, ensuring continuity.
In 2024–25, Mike Cleary and Pete Todaro shared interim coaching duties until Joe Morrill was appointed head coach for the 2025–26 season, with Cleary continuing as assistant.
On the ice, UVA surged:
- WACCHL Semifinals (2022–23)
- Back-to-back Fall Classic titles (2022–23, 2023–24)
- Regular Season championships (2023–24, 2024–25)
This era embodies the team’s defining values: passion, perseverance, and Cavalier pride, as highlighted in Cavalier Daily article “Passion Makes Perfect” (2025).
