Hello Brothers! My name is Ashton Khamphavong (Col class of ’27), a fourth-year student, current house manager, and former Sage. For those of you who I have not had the opportunity to speak with (or email), I was the Beta Pi undergraduate brother tasked with maintaining the chapter during our time away from 1533 Virginia Ave. I would like to sincerely apologize for the many emails explaining our situation you may have received from me, often ending with a mischievous donation link. Before I graduate from the University of Virginia, my goal is to reconnect our chapter with the many generations of brothers that have come before me. I want this relationship to be more than just numbers after a dollar sign; it’s about reliving memories, building the fraternity, and encouraging the undergraduate brothers to strive for perfection in both their personal and professional lives.
In December 2024, an electrical fire began in the basement of our chapter house; in the two years since, our chapter has fought to continue recruitment, find a home, and keep the brotherhood alive. You can read an account of chapter’s setbacks and growth over the past two years on our website.
Today, Beta Pi has finally returned home.
The chapter that once had no house, no recruitment budget, and no guarantee of surviving has emerged larger, stronger, and more connected than before. That outcome belongs to the undergraduate brothers who refused to allow extraordinarily difficult circumstances to divide them. They studied for finals from borrowed apartments, recruited from under a tent, held meetings wherever space was available, accepted the financial strain of a satellite house, and continued showing up for one another when almost every familiar part of fraternity life had disappeared.
It also belongs to the alumni who answered our calls, opened our letters, attended our Zoom meetings, shared their advice, and contributed the resources that allowed the chapter to rebuild.
We are profoundly grateful for the financial support we received. However, as we return to 1533, we hope our renewed relationship with alumni will become much more than a financial one. We do not want the only communication between the undergraduate chapter and our alumni to begin with “Dear Brother” and end with a donation link. Moving forward, we hope alumni will visit the house, attend chapter events, share their experiences, mentor undergraduate brothers, and reconnect with the friendships and traditions that made Beta Pi meaningful to them. The greatest lesson learned from the past two years is that our chapter is strongest when its generations remain connected.
The fire at 1533 could have marked the end of Beta Pi. Instead, it became the beginning of a new era – one built through undergraduate resilience, alumni generosity, and a shared determination to preserve the brotherhood for those who will come after us.
The road home was longer and more difficult than any of us expected, but because of the brothers who stood beside us, Beta Pi is finally ready to return.
