March 11, 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A great deal is happening behind the scenes here in Charlottesville and at the University of Virginia as momentum builds for the North Fork Ice Arena project.<\/p>\n<p>We have formally incorporated\u202fVirginia Ice Sports, Inc., and our five-member Board is now in place:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u202f\u202fDan Smythe (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201979), President<\/li>\n<li>\u202fRoger Voisinet, Co-President<\/li>\n<li>\u202fTom Hillgrove (<abbr title=\"McIntire School of Commerce\">Com<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201978), Vice President<\/li>\n<li>Keith Rosenfeld (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201979), Secretary<\/li>\n<li>Kareem El-Alaily (<abbr title=\"School of Engineering and Applied Science\">Engr<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201998), Treasurer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At our next Board meeting in early April, we will begin inviting individuals to join a\u202f Board of Advisors. If this is something that may interest you, please let me know by emailing me at <a href=\"mailto:roger@cvilleproperties.com\">roger@cvilleproperties.com<\/a>. Participation carries no formal obligations, but your insight and perspective would be very valuable as the project moves forward.<\/p>\n<p>The board has also signed a\u202fMemorandum of Understanding with the UVA Foundation\u202fto fund up to\u202f$75,000\u202ffor our architects\u2019 site plan analysis. This study will run through\u202fJune 2026. We are currently funding this work through deposits into our account at the\u202fUVA Alumni Association.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-81\" src=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-photo-1-300x197.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-photo-1-300x197.webp 300w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-photo-1-768x503.webp 768w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-photo-1.webp 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>On\u202fMarch 3, 2026, we held our first in-person meeting with our architects from\u202fJLG Architects, a Minneapolis-based firm. The meeting, which took place at Town Center IV at North Fork, was extremely productive. We reviewed our goals for the facility and shared the history of hockey and skating in Charlottesville. One particularly encouraging aspect of the discussion was how many members of the Foundation team had personal connections to the sport. These connections reminded us that hockey has deeper roots in this community than many might expect. The Winter Olympics and Ilia Malinin of George Mason University has increased local interest in skating sports substantially. We are excited about possibly planning for and including USA Sled hockey and disabled skate sports.<\/p>\n<p>After the meeting, several board members drove to Richmond to visit the construction site of the Richmond Ice Zone Ice Box, a two-sheet arena also designed by JLG Architects and scheduled for completion in July 2026. We expect to bring members of the Foundation team there for a tour sometime in May or June.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-78 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-richmond-ice-box-1024x502.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-richmond-ice-box-1024x502.webp 1024w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-richmond-ice-box-300x147.webp 300w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-richmond-ice-box-768x376.webp 768w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-richmond-ice-box-1536x753.webp 1536w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/march-update-richmond-ice-box.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, we are also exploring an early Phase 1 initiative. Board Vice President, Tom Hillgrove, owns a 60\u2019 x 100\u2019 seasonal outdoor rink, and if all goes well, we hope to install it at North Fork in early November 2026. The temporary rink would serve two purposes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-80\" src=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/March-update-temporary-rink-300x225.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/March-update-temporary-rink-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/virginia-ice-sports\/files\/2026\/05\/March-update-temporary-rink.webp 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A visible marketing and community engagement tool<\/li>\n<li>A way to reintroduce young people to skating while providing a convenient practice surface for the UVA Cavaliers men\u2019s and women\u2019s club teams.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Meanwhile, the teams themselves continue to generate excitement.
