Founding & Independent Years (1999\u20132003)<\/h2>\n

The UVA Women\u2019s Ice Hockey Club was officially established December 1, 1999, when students Libby Pettibone (Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201903)<\/strong>, president and captain; Nina Barker (Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201903)<\/strong>, vice president; and Julia Vollmers (Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201902)<\/strong>, treasurer, secured recognition as a Contracted Independent Organization (CIO). Soon after, the team achieved full club sport status.<\/p>\n

That first season, Nina\u2019s cousin, David Barker (Law<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201902)<\/strong>, served as the inaugural coach. In the spring of 2000, the Cavaliers played their first-ever game \u2014 a 2\u20131 win over Maryland\u2019s developmental team, a milestone that signaled the program\u2019s arrival.<\/p>\n

From 1999\u20132002, the club was led by its founders: Pettibone served as president and captain, with Barker as vice president and Vollmers as treasurer (until her graduation in 2002). In 2002\u201303, Pettibone continued as captain while Catherine Hovell (Engr<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201905)<\/strong>\u00a0assumed the presidency, guiding the organization through its next phase of growth.<\/p>\n

By 2000\u201301, the roster had grown to more than 20 players, supported in part by a generous donation from the Raven Society. The coaching staff expanded as well, with Ryan Benedict (Darden<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201901)<\/strong> as head coach, alongside Craig Lorie (Engr<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201993)<\/strong>, Mark Vorhees<\/strong>, and Carter Whisnand (Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201994, Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201901)<\/strong>. These early leaders provided continuity, with Mark staying on until Dalton Ford<\/strong> and Eric Sawyer<\/strong> joined in 2003.<\/p>\n

The first roster blended a few experienced skaters \u2014 notably Heather Bolingbroke Prekop (Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201904, Grad<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201906)<\/strong> and Michelle L\u2019Heureux (Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201902)<\/strong> as offensive standouts, and Pettibone (now Pass)<\/strong> and Jennifer Sokol (Engr<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201901)<\/strong> as defensive anchors \u2014 with many true beginners. What might have been a limitation instead became the team\u2019s greatest strength: relentless effort, rapid growth, and an eagerness to learn.<\/p>\n

The Cavalier Daily spotlighted the program\u2019s development in “The Puck Stops Here<\/a>” (2000) and “Playing on Solid Ice<\/a>” (2001), capturing the enthusiasm surrounding its growth and evolving culture.<\/p>\n

Between 1999 and 2003, UVA competed independently against regional clubs, laying the foundation for its eventual entry into the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC)<\/strong> under the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA)<\/strong> in 2003 \u2014 a move that launched the program into structured league play.<\/p>\n

DVCHC Era (2003\u20132020)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

UVA\u2019s transition to the DVCHC in 2003 marked the start of a dominant chapter. With Dalton Ford<\/strong> and Eric Sawyer<\/strong> joining the coaching staff, the Cavaliers captured championships in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2012<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Catherine Hovell<\/strong> remained president through 2004 and captained the team in 2004\u201305. A talented 2004 recruiting class, composed largely of first-years with prior hockey experience, elevated UVA into consistent contention.<\/p>\n
