{"id":379,"date":"2021-05-30T17:48:49","date_gmt":"2021-05-30T17:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aig.alumni.virginia.edu\/dearaapaan\/?p=379"},"modified":"2021-09-24T11:20:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T15:20:56","slug":"how-does-the-media-portrayal-of-asians-affect-you-in-the-work-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/2021\/05\/30\/how-does-the-media-portrayal-of-asians-affect-you-in-the-work-place\/","title":{"rendered":"How does the media portrayal of Asians affect you in the work place?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Dear AAPAAN<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How does the media portrayal of Asians affect you in the work place?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Anonymous<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dear Anonymous<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of recent media reporting about Asian-Americans being subjected to harassment and outright hate.\u00a0 Historically, there\u2019s been very little media portrayal of Asians.\u00a0 And what little there were, they were usually highly stereotyped images.\u00a0 Today, negative portrayals continue, but to be fair, there are also increasing amount of fair and even sympathetic portrayals as well.\u00a0 Just to be visible as part of the American landscape is progress.<\/p>\n<p>People react differently to these portrayals.\u00a0 Some choose to only believe the negative and discount the positive.\u00a0 Some choose to only look at the \u201cpositives\u201d, but that too could be a problem for those Asian that do not fit that image.\u00a0 We clearly have a challenge to be viewed neutrally just as individuals.<\/p>\n<p>In general, Asians probably still have a hurdle to overcome in the workplace.\u00a0 The typical stereotype of the Asian is the \u201cnerdy foreigner\u201d.\u00a0 We \u201cknow\u201d nerdy people are school smart and have no social skills.\u00a0 Look at the characters in \u201cThe Big Bang Theory\u201d.\u00a0 We all have a good laugh at their awkwardness.\u00a0 There are no way nerds can lead.\u00a0 Since Asians look foreign too, they also can\u2019t be fully trusted.\u00a0 What mysterious throughs go through their minds?\u00a0 On top of this, Asian women might be stereotyped as meek and submissive.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve never met an Asian, there\u2019s no reason not to believe it, right?\u00a0 You have to overcome overt or more much more likely institutional or unintentional\/subliminal racism.\u00a0 Workplace racism is illegal so you may have the law on your side, though in real life, outright racism is uncommon (or disguised) and most instances may be very hard to prove.<\/p>\n<p>I have worked in a US government agency and at international businesses.\u00a0 I have experienced probably more subtle forms of racism over my career.\u00a0 I was also aware of the need to market myself and be visible to management.\u00a0 I tended not to shoot from the hip, and would voice my views and opinions only after careful and analytical consideration.\u00a0 This personal preference fit some of the Asian stereotype and might have been construed as timidity or social awkwardness.\u00a0 I was well aware of the stereotype trap and worked to overcome them.\u00a0 With work experience, I formed strong cogent opinions about our business and how the world and organizations worked.\u00a0 I had coaching on what language to use to sound more assertive.\u00a0 This gave me the framework for spontaneous (but coherent) opinions and assertiveness in group interactions.\u00a0 I was very fortunate to have had a number of excellent and supportive managers.\u00a0 Bottomline though was that it was still up to me to take the initiative and work it.\u00a0 Remember, the only person really responsible for your career is you.\u00a0 I enjoyed a solid career with mostly interesting and rewarding positions and ending up being a senior manager of a major international operation.<\/p>\n<p>I believe that organizational culture is crucial.\u00a0 The impact of culture is obvious.\u00a0 If the boss is a closed minded racist, then no amount of positive media portrayal is going to improve the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that the geographic breath of your business matters too. If your company is an internationally oriented company, then it will have to cater to its diverse workforce, customers and business partners.\u00a0 It will, by necessity, be more aware of and tuned to different cultural and business norms.\u00a0 It will probably be more responsive to public opinion and media portrayals.\u00a0 An Asian-American might get better recognition in such an organization if the company has Asian business connections.\u00a0 The danger is that as an Asian American, you might be linked only to Asia and be excluded from non-Asian businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wee<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear AAPAAN How does the media portrayal of Asians affect you in the work place?
