Congratulations on the offer!<\/p>\n

I always find this question from the company to be disingenuous.\u00a0 They know what they pay their people and their HR people do salary surveys so they well know the market.\u00a0 A cynical view of this question is they are trying to see if they can pay you less because you may not know the market.\u00a0 A less cynical view is that they are prepared to be flexible and negotiate (maybe).<\/p>\n

Since they ask, let\u2019s assume it is a negotiation.\u00a0 You should never simply take your current salary and add a raise on top.\u00a0 Your current salary is not relevant.\u00a0 To negotiate, you need to find out what the company knows.\u00a0 That is, what is the market rate for that position? \u00a0\u00a0Without this knowledge you\u2019re a sitting duck.<\/p>\n

You may be able to find something on the internet like Glassdoor.\u00a0 But your best source is through networking.\u00a0 Contact friends and colleagues on what they know about the going pay rates.\u00a0 In the best of all worlds, you\u2019re able to find a cooperating contact inside the company.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the next step?\u00a0 Here are some options.<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Go back and say that you just want a competitive market compensation.\u00a0 Say that you\u2019re doing some homework on the market but what\u2019s their idea?\u00a0 This response tries to get them to open with an offer.\u00a0 Whatever they offer, you can accept or try to negotiate up.\u00a0 If you know the market, then you can judge how much upward room they have. There’s a chance that the company won’t come back with their offer first and end the discussion.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You have done your homework and you know the range of pay for that type of job.\u00a0 Should you give a range or a single number? \u00a0Based on your homework, you think a fair average salary is $70K.\u00a0 If you give a range of $65K to $75K, they\u2019ll work you to $65K because you told them it is acceptable.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On the other hand, giving a single number sounds like an ultimatum and doesn\u2019t imply any flexible give and take. \u00a0\u00a0If you say $70K and they\u2019re paying $75K for that job, they\u2019ll accept your $70K.\u00a0 If on the other hand, they are paying $65K they may or may not continue to negotiate.<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You can give a vague number in the competitive range.\u00a0 Say you respond with \u201caround $70K\u201d.\u00a0 It sounds like a single number but it\u2019s actually a range with room to go in either direction for negotiations.\u00a0 They will not be sure exactly what your low number is.\u00a0 You\u2019re telling them, it might be $70 or higher.\u00a0 Without specifying what you think that range is, you\u2019re inviting them to come back with a counter around your number.<\/p>\n

Your negotiating strength will depend on how competitive the job market is and your current job alternatives. If the job is hugely popular and in demand, your position may be take what they offer and be grateful. If you have a current job you\u2019re OK with, then you may be able to push a bit harder because you can always walk away.\u00a0 Try to justify a higher pay because you\u2019re bringing more to the table.\u00a0 Market yourself!<\/p>\n

You need to look at the total compensation package.\u00a0 Salary is one key concern but there are other considerations such as vacation, medical plan, company contributions to savings plan and annual bonuses.\u00a0 In your salary negotiations, if you can\u2019t get them to go up from their offer, you can try for a one time signing bonus or more vacation. \u00a0If you ask nicely, they\u2019re forced to consider it and might come part ways to giving you something.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t ask, you for sure will not get anything.\u00a0 Small companies, unlike large mature companies, may have the flexibility to accommodate you in order to close the deal.<\/p>\n
