I got to present to management once but I didn’t do well. How do I overcome the negative impression?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dear anonymous<\/p>\n

First off, it\u2019s great that you got to present.\u00a0\u00a0Whether it was by \u2018forced\u2019 or you wanted to \u2013 learning to present and convey thoughts is a hugely important communication skill.\u00a0\u00a0Managers and leaders (and those who want to be leaders) always have to practice this skill, so you are not alone.<\/p>\n

This general topic will also be covered in other posts in a series, but here are some tips you can use to improve your presentation skills:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Ask for Feedback<\/u><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Talk to you managers and others in the room to give you feedback.\u00a0\u00a0Set up 30 minutes to talk with them and listen carefully and write notes \u2013 try and get specific reasons why you may have failed (i.e.: maybe content was wrong; analysis was faulty; poor business judgment; failure to connect evidence to a conclusion, or stylistic problems).\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t be defensive.\u00a0\u00a0Create a list of items that you think you can work on (i.e.: removing filler words like \u2018uh\u2019, \u2018ah\u2019; or being more organized; or speaking slower, etc.).<\/li>\n
  2. Once you get feedback; you need to work on getting a 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0chance with your boss.\u00a0\u00a0Your boss hopefully wants to help you and see you succeed.\u00a0\u00a0(If he or she doesn\u2019t, then that\u2019s a separate post on why maybe this boss isn\u2019t working out for you).<\/li>\n
  3. Remember that everyone has their own style.\u00a0\u00a0You aren\u2019t trying to be Barack Obama or Oprah.\u00a0\u00a0You need to develop your own style and comfort, and realize that some people\u2019s advice may not jive with your style, and that\u2019s ok.<\/li>\n
  4. It will take time to develop\u00a0your own \u2018style\u2019<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(you may not even know what \u2018style\u2019 it is) \u2013 but with practice, you\u2019ll figure out what works for you.<\/li>\n
  5. Always\u00a0remember your audience<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a professional presentation will be different than a local community group.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Keep Practicing<\/u><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0The only way to get better is to keep presenting.\u00a0\u00a0You may not get professional work opportunities as much, so try different groups.\u00a0\u00a0Look at Toastmasters (a group where people learn\/practice public speaking), or other MeetUp groups.\u00a0\u00a0Get involved in community groups where you can run for office or be on a Board \u2013 you\u2019ll get the chance to give advice or present in small settings.\u00a0\u00a0All of this will make you more comfortable for the next work related presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Let Others Know<\/u><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Let others know that you are doing this practice work (including your boss).\u00a0\u00a0If people don\u2019t know, they may only remember that first bad experience you had.\u00a0\u00a0Tell your boss casually that you are working on this skill \u2013 she or he will be impressed and may find other opportunities for you to present.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
