style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dear Michael,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I was in college, I thought one of the secrets to test-taking success was to cram as much as possible the night before the exam.\u00a0\u00a0According to my (younger) self, I thought I\u2019d score better if I could use every waking minute to study \u2013 even if it meant taking heavy doses of coffee or Red Bull to ward off sleep.\u00a0As I look back now, I\u2019m sure I took half of my final exams in sleep-deprived, coma-like state.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-209 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/buddha-993059_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/buddha-993059_1280.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/buddha-993059_1280-300x225.jpg 300w, benefit of hindsight and a few other life experiences, I\u2019ve realized that the cramming strategy is exactly wrong.\u00a0\u00a0When my own daughter left for college, I told her that my two secret weapons for college success was sitting in front of the classroom (so that you were forced to pay attention) and regular sleep.\u00a0\u00a0By regular sleep, I mean going to bed and waking at a set time every day and getting whatever amount of sleep is needed to be healthy and functional, which can vary from person to person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why is\u00a0<u>regular<\/u>\u00a0sleep important?\u00a0\u00a0I think that going to bed and waking at a set time forces a person to schedule his or her life (and to keep to that schedule) and to prioritize how a person uses his or her time.\u00a0\u00a0For example, if you are trying to balance school and a part-time job, you will need to schedule your day, so as that you can meet your work obligations, while using the remaining time to keep up with your studies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prioritizing your time will mean that certain activities may fall out: checking out the latest cat video on YouTube, seeing the guest on the Late Late Show, or just loafing around with your roommates.\u00a0\u00a0While those things are fun and can be productive uses of your time (and some may prioritize YouTube viewing over school work!), you should not lose sleep over them.\u00a0\u00a0If you want to occasionally indulge in late night activities, go ahead and have fun, but make sure you\u2019ve gotten ahead on your work, so you can afford to sleep late the next day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-208 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/baby-19295_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/baby-19295_1280.jpg 853w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/baby-19295_1280-200x300.jpg 200w, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, life always intrudes and there will be occasions when you are forced to lose some sleep \u2013 life emergencies, work projects, and, of course, babies.\u00a0(Trust me: the level of sleep deprivation during Exam Week pales in comparison to having infants!)\u00a0\u00a0But the key is to plan ahead and accomplish as much as you can during the day \u2013 without disrupting your regular sleep patterns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steinbeck had one of the great quotes ever about the value of\u00a0sleep: \u201cIt is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hope this style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m not trained on this subject so I looked up \u201cWhy You Need Sleep?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The following is from the Johns Hopkins site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u201cIf you have ever felt foggy after a poor night\u2019s sleep, it won\u2019t surprise you that sleep significantly impacts brain function. First, a healthy amount of sleep is vital for \u201cbrain plasticity,\u201d or the brain\u2019s ability to adapt to input. If we sleep too little, we become unable to process what we\u2019ve learned during the day\u00a0<\/em><em>and<\/em><em>\u00a0we have more trouble remembering it in the future. Researchers also believe that sleep may promote the removal of waste products from brain cells\u2014something that seems to occur less efficiently when the brain is awake.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Sleep is vital to the rest of the body too. When people don\u2019t get enough sleep, their health risks rise. Symptoms of depression, seizures, high blood pressure and migraines worsen. Immunity is compromised, increasing the likelihood of illness and infection. Sleep also plays a role in metabolism: Even one night of missed sleep can create a prediabetic state in an otherwise healthy person.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, you are right. There\u2019s a direct relationship between getting enough sleep and mental (and physical) health.\u00a0\u00a0But everyone seems to have a different need for sleep.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve read that some highly successful people claimed to need only 3 hours per night.\u00a0\u00a0More power to them.\u00a0\u00a0I would be a zombie if I try to do that.\u00a0\u00a0My rule of thumb is; if you can\u2019t concentrate because you are too tired, then, shut now.\u00a0\u00a0Putting in more time when you cannot concentrate is counterproductive.\u00a0\u00a0You will get more stressed and get worse results.\u00a0\u00a0You have to know your own personal limits, and prioritize your school and work within those limits.\u00a0\u00a0When you are too tired, maybe taking short naps might help.\u00a0\u00a0I read that when you are asleep your brain continues to work.\u00a0\u00a0It sets memory and makes connections to that problem you\u2019ve been working all day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">My mother told me a traditional Chinese story about the hard working scholar.\u00a0\u00a0A scholar set a candle by his chin while he was studying through the night.\u00a0\u00a0If he fell asleep, his nodding head would fall and he would be woken by the flame burning his skin.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the classic parable about the devoted Asian scholar.\u00a0\u00a0Many \u201cTiger Moms\u201d and \u201cWolf Dads\u201d buy into this idea.\u00a0\u00a0They believe it\u2019s only a matter of working harder that will get you into Harvard (or any number of top named schools).\u00a0\u00a0Not everyone has the abilities.\u00a0\u00a0Some deficiencies cannot be overcome by more hours.\u00a0\u00a0Secondly, not everyone responds to pressure the same way.\u00a0Undoubtedly, some will be able to step up their game under pressure but many will buckle and do worse.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s tough when you are at the receiving end of this pressure.\u00a0\u00a0Keep this in mind when it\u2019s your turn to raise children.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-210 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/city-2669015_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/city-2669015_1280.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/city-2669015_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/city-2669015_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/dearaapaan\/files\/2018\/05\/city-2669015_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In many Asian countries a person\u2019s future is set by getting into the \u201cright\u201d school.\u00a0\u00a0I recently came back from Japan and I saw the tremendous pressure the high school graduate is under while cramming for the all important college exam. In such countries, the culling of people who go to the top of government or business occurs at college entrance.\u00a0\u00a0If you made it to Tokyo U or Beijing U, then you\u2019re likely set for life.\u00a0\u00a0From this perspective, one can understand why Asian parents are paranoid about their children getting into the top most schools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the US, the culling happens on the job during the early years as you establish your professional reputation.\u00a0\u00a0To be sure, getting a degree from the top named US schools will get you an early advantage and open many doors. But it\u2019s not a guarantee to the top.\u00a0\u00a0The US system is \u201crelatively\u201d more meritorious and more forgiving for late bloomers.\u00a0\u00a0There are many very successful people who didn\u2019t go to the top named schools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">So you didn\u2019t get into Harvard and your parents cannot brag about you to their Relatives and friends.\u00a0\u00a0So what?\u00a0\u00a0Relax.\u00a0\u00a0Your future is still open and you can succeed.\u00a0\u00a0Work smart and work hard but be sure to get enough
