Dear Anonymous<\/p>\n

We all know networking is very important, the common phrase \u2013 \u201cIt\u2019s not\u00a0what<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you know, but\u00a0who<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you know.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0I would go one step further, it\u2019s also \u2013 \u201cWho knows\u00a0you<\/em><\/strong>\u201d, that is, if someone is thinking about hiring someone, or a new opportunity, or a speaking engagement \u2013 will they think of you?<\/p>\n

They key to networking is being able to maintain\u00a0real<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0relationships with people.\u00a0\u00a0Too many people go to conferences and events and hand out business cards to random people, or add random people on LinkedIn with little thought.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0That is\u00a0not<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0networking \u2013 what you\u2019ve done is just made a weak connection with someone, but it likely won\u2019t help you in the future.<\/p>\n

Ok, so what\u2019s best way to network and stay in touch with people:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Be productive with your networking \u2013 quality over quantity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0When you meet someone, try to actually listen to them and get to know them.\u00a0\u00a0Ask them questions about their job, their interests, or their family (don\u2019t get too personal, though).<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Remember information<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Once you meet someone – write down that information somewhere (e.g.: Google contacts, or other application) so you can remember those details later (e.g.: they went to UVA, from Georgia, likes skiing, etc.).\u00a0\u00a0If\u00a0in six months\u00a0you meet them again, they\u2019ll be amazed that you remembered these facts.<\/li>\n
  2. Be interesting<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Also, make sure to tell people about you and your interests.\u00a0\u00a0The meeting should be an exchange of mutual interest.\u00a0\u00a0If you are looking for something specific \u2013 try to discretely tell them.\u00a0\u00a0They may meet 50 people, and if you have a funny story or interesting background, they\u2019ll remember you.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you are a student \u2013 ask them for advice on something, or if you are looking for a job, tell them you are in the market.\u00a0\u00a0Be careful here \u2013\u00a0don\u2019t specifically\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>ask them for a job or be too aggressive \u2013 that\u2019s a big turn-off and seem like you are being too transactional.\u00a0\u00a0They key really is to build an initial relationship, and then you can set something up later like an informational call or other meeting later<\/p>\n

    Be genuine<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0The key here is not to just spit back facts or information to someone, that would be weird.\u00a0\u00a0With networking, you are trying to learn from people\u2019s experiences to help you in your career \u2013 maybe investment banking wasn\u2019t for me, maybe I should go down this path in medicine, maybe I should talk to this VP about \u201cx or y\u201d, etc.<\/p>\n

    Stay in touch \u2013 Out of Sight, Out of Mind.\u00a0\u00a0I would argue there\u2019s four ways to stay in touch:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Social Media (like LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.)\u00a0\u00a0You should try and post articles, or share information on a weekly or monthly basis so your feed stays active.\u00a0\u00a0Your followers will see your information and remember you.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Not all of your content has to be \u2018new\u2019, it could be just your thoughts on something or things you are working on.<\/li>\n
    2. The second is general conferences, meetings, or other networking events where you run into people in a social setting.\u00a0\u00a0Attend these events and you\u2019ll keep in touch with your old network and build new colleagues as well.\u00a0\u00a0Set a goal for yourself (like 1 conference a year, 2 networking events a quarter) and stick to it.<\/li>\n
    3. The third option is one-on-one coffee, lunch, happy hour meetings with a person.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This is probably reserved for those you really want to build a strong relationship with.\u00a0\u00a0In reality, these people are\/will become your friends.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0They are likely to help you the most in a future job search or just generally for advice on your career.<\/li>\n
    4. Fourth option is just sending emails 1x every six months to check-in with someone, or calling someone every few months.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This can be helpful if the person is in a different city.\u00a0\u00a0You can give them an update on what\u2019s going, or ask them their advice on a particular issue.\u00a0\u00a0But, be careful \u2013 millennials like to email too much \u2013 there is no substitute for meeting in person.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you live in the same city, meet them in person.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      And finally, make sure to\u00a0thank people<\/strong>\u00a0and let them know how it went.\u00a0\u00a0People like to know they\u2019ve made some small (or large) difference.\u00a0\u00a0Keep in touch and let them know how their advice helped.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This acknowledgment is very important!\u00a0\u00a0Without this follow through, your relationship building could come to naught and drifts into indifference.<\/p>\n
