Founded on the core principles of leadership and service to the Hispanic and Latino\/e community, this Scholarship recognizes the extraordinary talent of students in our community and their ability to create a lasting impact on the University, the surrounding Charlottesville community, and future post-graduate plans. Currently a one-time scholarship awarded to an incoming student entering their first-year, the scholarship committee has plans to grow both the number of scholarships and amount awarded each year.<\/p>\n<p>The First-Year Scholarship was originally created in 2009 under the leadership of <strong>Hernando Herrera (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201989)<\/strong> and <strong>Jenny Willier Murphy (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201989)<\/strong> during their time on The Bol\u00edvar Network\u2019s Board and with a generous donation from <strong>Alexandra Arriaga (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201987)<\/strong>. Through a collaboration with Hernando, Jenny, the Network\u2019s leadership at the time; specifically the Fundraising &amp; Development Vice-Chairs <strong>Gina Flores (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201900)<\/strong> and <strong>Brian Zuluaga (<abbr title=\"Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy\">Batten<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201920)<\/strong>, as well as the Scholarship &amp; Awards Vice-Chair <strong>Hannah \u201cMel\u201d Borja (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201919, <abbr title=\"School of Law\">Law<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201926)<\/strong>, and the team at Alumni Association and Admissions, the release of the inaugural First-Year Scholarship award in the Spring of 2021 was made possible.<\/p>\n<p>Interested applicants to the First-Year Scholarship may apply through <a href=\"https:\/\/uva-alumni-scholarships.awardspring.com\/\">AwardSpring<\/a>. <strong>If you would like to contribute to the First-Year Scholarship or to other initiatives and awards from The Bol\u00edvar Network <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givecampus.com\/campaigns\/20054\/donations\/new\">please consider an online donation<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"btn btn-orange\" href=\"https:\/\/aig.uvaalumni.org\/bolivar\/scholarships-and-awards\/first-year-scholarship-past-recipients\/\">See past winners<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bol\u00edvar Network\u2019s First-Year Scholarship The Bol\u00edvar Network\u2019s First-Year Scholarship provides funds for an eligible high school student from the Commonwealth of Virginia to incentivize them to attend the University of Virginia.
