Challenges faced by Asian and Pacific Indigenous Communities and Current Advocacy Efforts – CANCELLED<\/h2>\n

Indigenous communities around the world face the same harsh reality of being evicted from their ancestral land and being denied the opportunity to exercise their sovereignty. In this session, we will be exploring challenges faced by indigenous communities in the context of the United States and the Philippines. Concepts of indigeneity and self determination will be explored in two case studies: Chamorros from the US territory of Guam and the Lumads from the Southern part of the Philippines. Emerson Fellow, Julie Bautista, will be discussing the indigenous landscape in US Public Policy and Archaeologist, Andrea Ragragio, will be exploring the internal displacement of Lumads due to militarization and counterinsurgency conflicts in Mindanao.<\/p>\n

In this closing event, AAPAAN celebrates AAPI achievements at UVA and beyond with a series of TED Talk-style presentations from alumna Wendy Shang and professors Shilpa Dav\u00e9, Charles A. Laughlin, and Syaru Shirley Lin. We will also present the AAPI Advancement Award to Professor Shu-Chen Chen, known as Chen Laoshi to her students, for her dedication to her teaching and her countless contributions to the Department of East Asian Languages, Literature, and Culture, and to the University community.<\/p>\n
