Board of Directors

Board Member

Purpose: Board members help plan events, coordinate our scholarship and mentorship programs, and shape the future of the national UVA APA network. Board members serve a three-year term and are elected every spring.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve a three-year term
  • Attend Board meetings twice a year
  • Donate at least $100 annually to AAPAAN (to the best of one’s ability). The donation can be to AAPAAN’s general operating funds or to the AAPAAN Scholarship fund.

AAPAAN Student Representative

Purpose: This student will serve as liaison between UVA’s AAPI student organizations and AAPAAN, ensuring student voices are represented in alumni programming and fostering intergenerational connections. Student representatives serve a one-year term on the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend AAPAAN Board Meetings (1–2 per semester) to share student perspectives and needs
  • Promote AAPAAN events (e.g., YARden, Asian Alumni Weekend, mentorship programs) to student groups via listservs, social media, and club meetings
  • Partner with the Major Events Chair to integrate student performances or speakers into alumni programming
  • Advocate for student priorities (e.g., AAPI resource centers, scholarships) in AAPAAN discussions
  • Gather student feedback on AAPAAN initiatives and report insights to the Alumni Engagement Committee
  • Submit a year-end summary of student engagement highlights (e.g., event turnout, mentorship matches)

Scholarship Committee

Application Reviewer

Purpose: To serve on the selection committee responsible for reviewing applications and identifying individuals who are deserving of receiving the four $5,000 AAPAAN scholarships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • January-March:
    • Conduct a electronic review of student’s scholarship applications and make recommendations to the Committee Chair
    • Attend virtual committee meetings (approximately two-three) to determine the final four selections.
  • April:
    • If available, attend the AAPAAN Spring Celebration on Grounds to present the scholarships to the recipients

Alumni Engagement Committee

Activities Chair

Purpose: Execute high-impact events that foster community and belonging. This position serves a two-year term on the Alumni Engagement Committee. Please note:  Alumni Engagement Committee Chairs are not members of the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead planning for 2–3 events during the spring and fall (total of 4-6 events per year)
  • Coordinate logistics (venues, catering, volunteers) with support from the Marketing Intern
  • Partner with UVA student organizations and Multicultural Student Services staff for collaborative events
  • Gather post-event feedback to improve future programming
  • Submit a year-end summary of activity highlights to the Alumni Engagement Committee

Major Events Chair

Purpose: Lead AAPAAN’s two main events—the fall YARden Party and spring Asian Alumni Weekend. This position serves a two-year term on the Alumni Engagement Committee. Please note:  Alumni Engagement Committee Chairs are not members of the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all aspects of YARden (October) and Asian Alumni Weekend (April), as well as attending both events in-person
  • Develop event timelines, budgets, and run-of-show plans in collaboration with the AAPAAN board and UVA Alumni Association
  • Coordinate with the UVA Alumni Association and other key stakeholders for event planning
  • Gather feedback on the major initiatives and report insights to the Alumni Engagement Committee
  • Submit a brief report to the Alumni Engagement Committee with lessons learned and recommendations for the next year

Mentorship Chair

Purpose: Facilitate meaningful alumni-student professional mentorship. This position serves a two-year term on the Alumni Engagement Committee. Please note:  Alumni Engagement Committee Chairs are not members of the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the AAPAAN Mentorship Program (matching, check-ins, evaluations)
  • Recruit mentors and mentees via newsletters, social media, and outreach events
  • Host 2–3 mentorship events/year (career workshops, networking nights)
  • Assess program impact through surveys and feedback
  • Gather feedback on mentorship initiatives and report insights to the Alumni Engagement Committee
  • Submit a year-end summary of mentorship highlights to the Alumni Engagement Committee

Outreach Chair

Purpose: Strengthen ties between AAPAAN and alumni and students through intentional engagement. This position serves a two-year term on the Alumni Engagement Committee. Please note:  Alumni Engagement Committee Chairs are not members of the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and grow the alumni contact database (track engagement metrics)
  • Collaborate with UVA Alumni Association, UVA Clubs and their respective regional officers, and other alumni interest groups (e.g., shared events, regional outreach)
  • Organize 1–2 networking events during the spring and fall, for a total of 2-4 events per year (virtual or in-person, e.g., regional meetups, class reunions)
  • Assist the Mentorship Chair in alumni mentor recruitment
  • Gather feedback on outreach initiatives and report insights to the Alumni Engagement Committee
  • Submit a year-end summary of outreach highlights to the Alumni Engagement Committee

Marketing and Social Media

Marketing Intern

Purpose: Enhance AAPAAN’s visibility and engagement with the alumni community through digital media efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create at least two posts and/or pieces of content for social media per week and newsletter drafts needed on a case-by-case basis (event promo, alumni spotlights, student spotlights, etc.)
  • Track engagement metrics (email open rates, social media reach)
  • Design graphics and videos for events, with guidance from the Activities Chair
  • Suggest creative strategies to boost online engagement
